With its rich heritage and vibrant central business district, Invercargill is more than just the region’s commercial hub and tourist service centre. The City of Water and Light has been graced with a thriving economy, vivacious student life and a history that reflects the strong Maori and Celtic influence that pioneered the province of Southland.
The 1200 hectares of gracious parklands and gardens, including renowned Queens Park Garden, has earned it a reputation as Southland's garden city. It is well worth spending a few days in Invercargill, there are many things you must do whilst in town, like visiting the Tuatara at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, New Zealand’s oldest living mammals (some are upwards of 100 years old). Remembering also that Invercargill is the town made famous by Burt Monroe’s heroic life lived in the feature film “The Worlds Fastest Indian” starring Sir Anthony Hopkins.
