Stewart Island

Many visitors to the region never set foot upon the sandy beaches of Stewart Island, a short one hour ferry journey from the southern port town of Bluff. We believe everyone that visits Southland should take it upon themselves to experience some time on Stewart Island.

Many visit Stewart Island to enjoy the land and seascapes, view the wildlife, walk, boat, fish, dive, kayak, hunt and just relax, a Stewart Island holiday will be an experience that will draw you back here again and again.

The Island was named Te Punga o Te Waka a Maui by local Maori which translates as “The Anchor Stone of Maui’s Canoe”, this refers to the part played by this Island in the legend of Maui and his crew, who from their canoe (the South Island) caught and raised the great fish, (the North Island).

The island gained its English name from William Stewart. Who in 1809 was aboard the ship “Pegasus”, sailing from Port Jackson, Australia, on a sealing expedition in the area. While the boat was in the large south eastern harbour which now bears it’s name (Pegasus), William Stewart began charting the southern coasts, and his work is acknowledged by the Island’s name.

In 2002 the Islands landscape treasures were recognised and the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the Island was born. The National park is known by one of the Maori names given to the Island. Rakiura recalls glowing, and the aurora australis, or Southern Lights.
