Situated off the beaten track on the southern-most coast of the South Island The Catlins is a major highlight of the Southern Scenic Route. We believe The Catlins to be another of the “must visit” areas of Southland.

Until very recently the Catlins Coast had only dirt roads, so it’s was difficult for some to access. For many navigating these roads only heightened the adventure one would have whilst exploring the region of coastal forest and sandy beaches.

The Catlins area, which covers the area from Fortrose to Owaka, on the South Eastern Coast of the South Island was named after Captain Edward Cattlin, who made a land claim here, with the intention to forestall stringent land laws.
