Ascot Park Hotel History
 |
Ascot Park Hotel covers an expansive 17 acres and has been an icon of Invercargill for the last 34 years. The goal for the site was to provide a tasteful, modern, internationally classed hotel and conference centre for Invercargill city and plans to build a single floor, fully contained complex were released in 1972.
The plan for site was to build motel units along with a fully contained hotel complex on landscaped grounds that provide privacy and noise reduction for the site and the guests.

In a bold move by the Invercargill Licensing Trust the site was build in stages, utilizing permanent and temporary facilities in order to gain revenue from the complex even while it was being completed.
Work officially began in 1976 on the motels units to the south of the site and in December of that year the 23 motel rooms were completed and work on temporary facilities began. These facilities would be used in conjunction with the motel units while the permanent buildings of the hotel were being completed and in December of 1977 Ascot Park was opened in its temporary condition with the motel units and temporary facilities providing accommodation and dining.
From 1978 to 1980 permanent dining and kitchen facilities, the complexes conference rooms along with the entrance and main foyer were completed. The last facility added to the hotel before its opening was the pool area and on the 16th of February 1980 Ascot Park was officially opened by Prime Minister Robert Muldoon.
Upon completion the Y shaped complex had 81 rooms and conference facilities able to cater for 600+, instantly becoming the crown jewel of the Invercargill Licensing Trust.
While the concept for Ascot Park Hotel has stayed the same, since its completion in 1980 the hotel has seen the addition of extra conference rooms, upgrading of the interior and facilities inside the hotel along with the addition of two new wings, the Henderson wing in 1995 and the Harrington wing in 2010.
Today Ascot Park Hotel offers 92 Hotel rooms and 24 motel units, 8 conference rooms, pool and spa facilities, gym, fully licensed bar and restaurant, a world class hotel that is a unique gateway into Invercargill and the Southland Region. |
