Visiting Southland

Within a few hours radius of Invercargill lays a wealth of internationally-acclaimed experiences, making the city the ideal base for those taking day trips.

Situated at the Southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand, Invercargill is the gateway to some of the world’s most rugged, natural and spectacular scenic attractions. The haunting majesty of Milford SoundFiordland National Park, the CatlinsRiverton and the Southern Lakes all form part of this tremendous Southland Region.

Fiordland National Park is the largest area of in New Zealand and one of the largest national parks in the world. Four of the country's Great Walks (the Milford, Routeburn, Kepler and Tuatapere Hump Ridge tracks) are located within its boundaries. Follow the Southern Scenic Route from Dunedin to Fiordland and experience the magic for yourself.

Thirty kilometres south, nestled above Foveaux Strait, is the port town of Bluff, home of the iconic Bluff Oyster and a series of short coastal and bush walks. Only a short flight or ferry-ride away lies the tranquility of Stewart Island National Park. Home of New Zealand's largest kiwi population, and the birding capital of New Zealand, it is also known by the Maori name Rakiura which is usually translated as 'Glowing Skies', a reference to the sunsets for which Stewart Island is famous for and the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights that are a phenomenon of the Southern latitudes.
