Home of New Zealand's largest kiwi population, and the birding capital of New Zealand, it is also known by the Maori name Rakiura which is usually translated as 'Glowing Skies', a reference to the sunsets for which Stewart Island is famous for and the Aurora Australis or Southern Lights that are a phenomenon of the Southern latitudes.
